By participating in circles regularly, students learn the value of building and maintaining peaceful classroom communities, develop and use language that is reflective of restorative practices and use restorative questioning to help them communicate more effectively. Circles promote inclusiveness and provide opportunities for everyone to speak and listen to one another in a safe environment.
At Tallawong Public School, circles are used to:
- celebrate student successes
- teach pro-social skills and build relationships
- discuss difficult issues.
By going around the circle in order, everyone has an opportunity to be heard. This process also reduces the risk of discussions being dominated by a small number of people. A talking piece such as a ball or soft toy can be introduced to facilitate taking turns to speak in the circle.
